Recent research highlights the potential of soil-borne fungi in carbon management and climate change mitigation. While plants and microorganisms are known for their roles in carbon capture, the capabilities of fungi remain underexplored. The review emphasizes the need for synthetic biology applications to enhance the carbon fixation pathways of these fungi, which could lead to improved long-term carbon storage, pollutant degradation, and soil health. The study calls for prioritizing specific fungal guilds for future research and development.
