Every autumn, Corvo Island in the Azores goes dark for five nights to assist fledgling Cory’s shearwaters as they attempt their first flight to the ocean. This initiative, started by the island's residents in 2019, aims to mitigate the dangers posed by artificial light, which confuses the young birds. The community began this effort after noticing high mortality rates among the seabirds, leading to the launch of the 'SOS Cagarro' campaign in 1995. Volunteers actively rescue disoriented birds during this period, ensuring their safe passage to the ocean.
